Our Neighborhood and Apartment

Jerusalem is divided into two basic parts. The "old city" is surrounded by large walls whose present structure dates to around the 1500's. For most of the city's history, this was Jerusalem. However, starting in the mid-1800's there began to sprout up neighborhoods and settlements outside the city walls,medium_6_Simcha_our_Landlady.jpg these have been called the "modern city". Today, the modern city eclipses the old city in size and population and surrounds it on almost all sides. We live on the West side of the modern city, which is a 25 minute walk from the old city. Our neighborhood, called "Nakhlaot", is perfectly located for our living situation. We've included some pictures of our apartment and our neighborhood. We are also a 5min walk from the main food market on this side of town called the "shuq" ('market'). It's quite an experience and we've tried to give you a taste of it in photos and video. We're also a 10min walk from the city's central bus station, where we can go anywhere in the country. So, we are really blessed by our living situation. Hi Jessica and Tim!

I have so enjoyed reading your posts and viewing the pictures. You have quite the awesome scenery!

Seeing the pictures of the kittens made me think you might want an update on Miles. He has really made himself at home in our apartment and is getting along great with all the roommates. He's learned to eat most of his food right away when he gets it so that Sophie doesn't finish it for him. I think he likes the variety of places there are to lay under and on top of. And he lets me brush his smoother parts for a bit, but he has some matted together hair on one side that he's not to keen on me working at. I posted a couple more pictures of him on my blog if you'd like to view them, along with some musings about how he and sophie make me feel like a parent.

Thinking of you guys often! much love and peace,

Kathy

Loved the posts, pictures, and video. Living here in So Cal I can vouch that Israel does look very much like here. We just returned from a 4 day weekend at the beach just north of San Diego. The water was in the 70s, which is warm by our standards. By the way, I have a camera like yours, without video image stabilization, so fast movements are exaggerated. My head was spinning on some of the fast 360 shots! Please slow them down a bit. I'm living my adventurous youth all over again vicariously through you guys!

Love, Kris

I'd have to say I love the last picture with the grapes! My kitchen is all grapes and that picture is frame-able! :)
